Ever since I first dipped my first chunk of crusty bread into a warm ceramic pot filled with gooey Emmentaler and Gruyére cheeses, I’ve been a goner for this classic alpine dish, which originated in the mountains of Switzerland centuries ago. Today, fondue can encompass any melted cheese, desert, broth or oil dish that’s served […]

Colorful stained glass windows, intricate masonry, and wide verandas—I’ve always admired the beautiful Victorian buildings that fill Portland’s tree-lined avenues. Their owners, the Rose City’s original entrepreneurs, put a lot of pride into their homes. They employed the best architects, used the best materials, and hired the most talented artists to create dramatic, stately homes […]

A Sweet Peek Inside Salt & Straw’s Production Facility

Salt & Straw Spoonful

At the corner of a dark grey building in Portland’s Central Eastside, I step through the unassuming glass door into a sanitizing foot bath. This cleans any bacteria from the soles of my shoes. Then I tuck my hair into a bright blue hairnet. Around me, a half-dozen fellow journalists and writers do the same. […]
